PART 2. SELECTED BOOKS, EXHIBITION CATALOGUES, & STUDY-GUIDES

1965 MATISSE CHASUBLES. New York: Museum of Modern Art. [ex. cat.]
Matisse began to paint at the end of the 19th century, when Modernism was becoming a secular search for the sacred, a way of questing that left traditional "religion" behind. He did not make "religious" art until late in life when he designed these ritual vestments as part of his comprehensive design for a chapel in southern France.

1966 LOUIS I. KAHN. New York: Museum of Modern Art. [ex. cat.] Kahn is considered the most important American architect of the second half of the 20th century. This is the catalogue of his first retrospective, written after interviews with Kahn & his associates. Kahn's influence has been enormous, both as a form-maker & as a highly philosophical thinker. Kahn was focused on bringing traditional spiritual values and symbols into the architecture of contemporary life.

1968 CHESS SETS. New York: Walker. London: Studio Vista. [book] This concise world history of the game concentrates on the symbolism of the pieces, from the ancient Orient to the work of many famous 20th century artists. It is dedicated to Duchamp who assisted in many ways.

1970 HECTOR GUIMARD. New York: Museum of Modern Art. [ex. cat.] Guimard was the leading French architect/designer of the Art Nouveau era. This early Modernist also influenced such artists as Matisse, Picasso, and Dali. Guimard's spontaneous linear fluidity anticipates the work of Pollock. This was the first monograph on Guimard. The exhibition was Guimard's first museum retrospective & later traveled to San Francisco, Toronto & Paris.

1971THREE CENTURIES OF AMERICAN PAINTING.
S.F.: Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. 2nd ed. 1977. [book] A concise but comprehensive general survey of the styles & symbolism of American painting from its origins to early Modernism. The illustrations are from the recently combined collections of the de Young Museum & the Legion of Honor Museum. This book was the first of four by the author to be used as textbooks in the California State University system.

1973 THREE CENTURIES OF FRENCH ART...[Norton Simon Collection]. .
S.F.: Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Vol. 1, 1973; Vol. 2, 1975. [ex. cat.] Edited with an Introduction & essays by Graham, et al., assisted by his students at the University of California, Berkeley, & Lone Mountain College. A survey of the styles & symbolism of French painting & sculpture from the 17th century to early Modernism, with biographical sketches of each artist. This famous French collection is now the core of the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena. This publication was used as a textbook at CSU, Hayward, for several years.

1974 Co-Author: CLAUDE MONET: Paintings from California Collections. S.F.: Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco [ex. cat.] Impressionism was a joyous celebration of the beauty of the material world. Meyer Schapiro went so far as to call it the "rococo phase of Realism". Monet found beneath the surface of matter transcendent luminosity. Monet's late work, with its very high level of abstraction, spontaneous fluidity, and all-pervasive luminosity, was a major influence on a number of Ab. Ex. painters.

1975 Managing Editor: IMAGES FOR ETERNITY: Egyptian Art from the Brooklyn Museum. S.F.: Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco [ex. cat.]

1975 THE RAINBOW BOOK.
[An encyclopedic survey of color symbolism from Ancient to Modern Times] Berkeley & London: Shambhala. 1st edition [book; colored pages] Edited with an Introduction & essays by Graham (primary co-author) & many other authors. Associate Editors: Mark P. Burstein & Larry Wurn. This is a global survey of world art & mythology, devoted to rainbows in particular & color in general. It is divided into three parts: art, physics & metaphysics. Including is not only the work of famous painters, poets & scientists on mythic symbolism and physical symbolism, but also statements by C. G. Jung, Lama Govinda, Yogananda, et al., on the esoteric symbolism of the spectrum. The editorial purpose was to bring together a comprehensive vision of our multi-dimensional universe as a whole, and to make the information available to the general public at graduated levels of complexity. Joseph Campbell described this book as "really wonderful".

1987 THE SPONTANEOUS GESTURE: PRINTS AND BOOKS OF THE ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST ERA. Canberra: Australian National Gallery & University of Washington Press. [book]
The first survey of these works, in the United States & Europe, based on interviews with many of the leading painter-printmakers from the final period of Modernism. The emphasis is on transcendental luminosity as subject-matter. This book is now the standard reference for the graphic art of this period.

1990 VINCENT VAN GOGH: PAINTER, PRINTMAKER, COLLECTOR. [book/handbook]
Pasadena: Norton Simon Museum of Art. This handbook of Simon's world-famous van Gogh collection is a concise survey of the development of the artist, with emphasis on how his secular search for the sacred led to new ways of symbolizing the transcendent. This major innovation in the Western history of style & symbolism was partly inspired by van Gogh's deep love of Japanese art and Buddhist philosophy, and became characteristic of Post-Impressionist styles from the Symbolist era to the Expressionist era. The new theories articulated in the text were seconded by the artist's nephew, Vincent van Gogh, during the author's conversations with him at the van Gogh exhibition in San Francisco in 1970.

1991 IMPOSSIBLE REALITIES: MARCEL DUCHAMP & THE SURREALIST TRADITION.
Pasadena: World Art Press, for the Norton Simon Museum of Art. [ex. cat.]
This document is a record of the exhibition that was on view at the NSM for a year. The core of the exhibition was a group of works collected at the time of the artist's first museum retrospective in Pasadena in 1963, which were supplemented by many other works done under the influence of Duchamp. The catalogue describes the symbolism of Duchamp's best-known work (which includes Alchemical symbolism), positions him as a major force in the development of techniques and attitudes used by Modernists in their secular quest for the sacred, and outlines his direct influence on many of the major artists of the Surrealist era in Europe & America, and major artists of contemporary era in New York & California. Several of the insights articulated in the text come from the author's personal relationship with Duchamp during the 1960s. The hardcover edition is a limited edition "box-valise".

1991 THE PRINTS OF WILLEM DE KOONING: A CATALOGUE RAISONNE
Paris: Lebon. Vol.I (English, French, & German) [The standard reference] De Kooning is the last of the great Abstract Expressionists. His international respect is such that he holds the world's auction record for a work by a living artist. His prints are known by fewer people, even though they are among the best made in post-war America. Based on conversations with the artist, from 1965 to 1985, the author notes the influence of Zen and articulates the symbolism of de Kooning's non-figurative prints and paintings as images of "nothingness," and of his feeling for light that cannot be seen - the light that de Kooning's hero, Matisse, called "not the physical phenomenon but...pure, non-material light".

1991 SACRED VISIONS: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SACRED ART OF WORLD RELIGIONS.
Pasadena: World Art Press, 2nd Edition, Vol.I, 1991: Vol.II, 1992. [University Reader for CSU] Volume I: Tribalism, Taoism, Hinduism, & Buddhism. Volume II: Judaism, Islam, & Christianity. As art-historical textbooks are focused primarily on questions of style rather than symbolism, and as textbooks on world religions are not yet very visual, there is a large gap in the literature for those who wish to study world symbolism. Except for dictionaries (which usually have only a few illustrations), there is little to read on comparative symbolism, particularly symbolism seen in its natural psycho-social setting. This reader was designed to help fill that gap. It is an illustrated survey that examines in a systematic manner both the exoteric symbols and the esoteric symbols of each spiritual tradition within its cultural context. The uncomplicated language used to articulate the esoteric ideas was developed by the author during 20 years of teaching world art, world mythology, and world religions to college students & university students.

1992 THE TRIBAL CULTURE OF OUR ANCESTORS: AN OVERVIEW OF SHAMANIC ART FROM THE STONE AGE TO THE IRON AGE,5th edition; 7th Edition, 1996.
Aracta & Antioch: World Art Press, for CSU, Hayward. [study-guide] This booklet was designed for those who are just beginning to study the basic ideas & images used by art historians & cultural historians to define in general terms the meaning of tribalism, shamanism, etc., together with the psycho-social and psycho-cosmic context of traditional art & mythology. This is the traditional worldview of societies overrun by Indo-Europeans who established male-oriented value systems that have dominated many societies (including Western civilization) from the ancient era to the modern era. Included are graphic outlines of the primary stages in the development of cultural history from the Stone Age to the present.

1996 RHYTHMS & REVERBERATIONS: MULTICULTURAL ART IN THE UNITED STATES & ITS DEVELOPMENT FROM THE TRIBAL WORLD
1st edition: Arcata & Antioch: World Art Press for CSU, Hayward, 1993.
2nd edition: Arcata: World Art Press for Humboldt State University. [University Reader] There are surveys of contemporary African American art, Asian American art, Hispanic American art, & Native American art; however, there is no textbook for the field of contemporary multicultural art as a whole. Therefore, this reader was prepared to serve that purpose, with funding from the Fund for Innovative Teaching at CSU, Hayward. It has been used as the primary textbook for Graham's courses on "Ethnic Art in the United States" at CSUH, and "Ethnic Visual Heritage & its Socio-Political Background" in the Department of Ethnic Studies at HSU. It is the first textbook of its kind to be used in the CSU system.
