AAUW History Exhibits

In 1990 as a response to the national organization's call to join the movement to make the real contributions of women in our society more accessible to schools' the Humboldt Branch decided to create and exhibit a body of information on this subject for Humboldt County. A committee was formed to identify, gather information on, interview if living, and photograph women who had made significant contribution in the history of our county. Each year a new committee is formed to prepare the exhibit. For the last three years, AAUW spouse and photographer, Tom Gooch, has taken superb portraits of the honorees.

The first year was concentrated on identifying from the past and a few living citizen contributors. In following years, the focus turned to Women Making a Difference, or contemporary women. It remained such until the current year (1996). These exhibits are always created for March, Women's History Month, and displayed at either College of the Redwoods or Humboldt State University yearly. Then the exhibits are available for display in schools. We are currently deciding on a location for permanent archiving.

In the meantime, due to our participation in the Tele-schools Project, Blackberry Bramble Network, we decided to publish, both in hard copy and online, the collections from 1990 to 1996. Copies are available for downloading and printing to schools and for other non-profit endeavours; and probably, printed/bound copies will be available for purchase. At this writing, the AAUW board is considering alternatives for the hardbound copies.

And so for now, PLEASE, make free use of this material for schools and bring these talented, community serving women part of your curriculum.
